Stress Awareness Month

Yet another year goes by and stress is still a major part of our lives. We have seen a new wave of apps and websites spring up with ways to help us de-stress but we don’t or maybe can’t address the source of our stress.

We all know the symptoms of stress, we know the effect it can have on our health and we see the constant media highlighting mental health issues, another side affect of stress. So why do we not acknowledge the scientific proof that the stress a mum feels during her pregnancy can increase risks to the wellbeing of her pregnancy and her unborn baby?

My own daughter is now pregnant, I have attended every appointment with her and stress is not discussed at all. No advice has been given even to be aware of the symptoms of stress so that mums to be can be empowered and use some of the many tools out there to help them de-stress.

Stress can be one of the major factors that affect the movements of the unborn baby in the womb and so we will be launching an awareness month in June called Routine in the Womb to bring this much needed information to as many people as possible.

In the meantime, if you are at all concerned you are being affected by stress please do speak to your GP or midwife and find a way that suits you to relax – yoga, meditation (we have some targeted for pregnancy here), tai chi etc.
